I love this breed, they're funny, medium sized birds with quite a few interesting genetic traits that are most desirable.
The top 2 traits of Cream Legbar are;
~ Auto sexing chicks at hatch. Cream Legbar chicks hatch out with distinct male and female traits so you immediately know who's male and who's female! This is very rare in chickens.
~ They lay blue/green eggs. Also another rare trait. How cool is that?!?
A little history...
The Legbar is a rare British auto-sexing breed of chicken.
To create this unique breed, American barred Plymouth Rock birds were crossed with brown Leghorns to create the gold and silver colour varieties.
Once that lineage was established, the Cream Legbar was then established by cross-breeding these with white Leghorns.
Then later, this linaged was crossed with Araucanas.
This caused them to carry the genetic traits of a crest and to lay blue or blue-green eggs.
π Cream Legbar traits to note π
Egg production of approximately 180 eggs per year.
Personality is calm, friendly, docile but there is not a lot going on upstairs. They will often run into walls or get themselves into situations that will make you look at them sideways and think 'Really mate?'
Good for a laugh.
More tid bits;
May include hens who lay white eggs (throwback genetic trait)
Donβt always lay through the winter
Sometimes get the itch to hatch and raise chicks
Are very hardy
Are prone to frostbite on their combs π
Are predator-savvy
Make excellent free rangers
May destroy your backyard and garden π¬
Are happy in backyards and runs
Are peaceful in a mixed-breed flock
Produce the occasional all-white bird (the rare Frost White Legbar)
So with all this knowledge at your fingertips, this should help you decide if a Cream Legbar will be a good addition to your back yard flock β€οΈ
