Chickens need a minimum of 1.2 square metres per chicken and preferably more. They also need around 40 cm perching space each in a weather proof well ventilated night coop with proper perches. Perches are better flat with rounded off edges rather than completely round. The chook yard and the night coop need to be fox proofed.
Commercial breeds such as Isa Browns start laying at around 18 weeks of age. However, they have a limited laying lifetime of around 2-3 years. Exhibition breeds start laying at around 24-28 weeks. They have a laying lifetime of around 6-8 years although productivity declines with age.
No. Adult chickens moult, that is replace their feathers, in late summer/early Autumn every year. During this time they cease laying. The moulting period coincides with the shortening of daylight hours in winter and a consequent reduction in egg laying. Some chickens may not lay for 2-3 months. Improper feeding of laying hens also reduces egg laying or may lead to egg shell quality problems.
