Quails are flighty, impulsive, and unpredictable creatures, all characteristics of a quixotic nature, which we find both charming and endearing.
Quixotic also means idealistic at the expense of practicality, which can be rephrased as having intentions or ideas that are admirable but not necessarily practical.
Some may see the Milken Eco Farm Initiative as a quixotic endeavour. Yet some see the pursuit of compassionate AND sustainable quail farming as both quixotic and essential, as we move towards a future.
Quail have been hunted, domesticated and bred in close captivity for hundreds of years, impairing their natural instincts. Breeding and farming quail in a safe but more natural environment is our ideal, even though often impractical. Of course it’s easier and more profitable to throw quail into a small cage with food and water. Providing a natural habitat of Deep litter and grassy undergrowth and plants to provide protection from predators above with tunnels and caves to hide and breed in is not always practical, but what is necessary for compassionate quail farming.
Changing the world, fighting the effects of climate change and challenging unsustainable farming practices are idealistic pursuits that may be impractical, but are ultimately worthwhile. Therefore, in our name, we acknowledge the quixotic nature of natural, humane and sustainable farming, which strengthens our impulse to push boundaries and challenge what is easiest today (i.e. most profitable) in search of vital investment in tomorrow.
Our Sustainable farming practices focus on producing food, fibre, plant or animal products without harming natural resources and land and considering social responsibilities such as working and living conditions of farmers and workers, the needs of rural communities, and health and safety of the consumer both in the present and the future.
